Vocational Training School

Vocational Training School: What It Is
A vocational training program teaches the skills you need to get a job in a particular field, like computers, health care or cosmetology.

You Might Like It If….

  • You want to learn skills for a specific job
  • You're not interested in a traditional education (like college)

How it Works

  • You learn the skills you need for a specific job (like being a truck driver or hairdresser).
  • Usually, once you've graduated from the program, you need to take a test to get your certification for the trade you studied. For example, if you attend truck-driving school, you will have to pass a test to get your Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
  • .

How Long it Takes

  • About 5 to 12 months, depending on what degree or certificate you're working towards.

Why Do It

  • Find a job anywhere: Once you're certified for a particular trade you can get a job almost anywhere.
  • Get a better job/earn more money: The more skills you have, the more money you can make.

Paying for It

  • Loans and grants: A lot of vocational schools offer student loans or grants to help you pay the tuition (which may be around $5,000 total for a two-year program). Ask the schools about financial aid programs.
