If you live in California, Florida, or Texas, you may face particular challenges buying insurance because of the dangers of earthquakes, hurricanes and mold. Here's what you need to know:
California
Standard homeowner policies do not cover earthquakes. To be covered in the case of earthquakes, you must buy extra insurance. By California law, any insurance company that offers home insurance has to offer earthquake insurance as well. You will need to buy this insurance through a California Earthquake Authority Member Company. Find one of these companies.
Get an estimate of how much this additional insurance will cost you.
Depending on how much money you make, if you own your own home you may be able to get grants or low-interest loans to retrofit your home to make it safer in case of an earthquake. Get more information on these programs.
Florida
Because of the risk of hurricanes, if you live in Florida you may have more trouble buying home insurance than peoples in other states. But there are things you can do.
If you live along the coast, you should make sure when you're buying home insurance that damage from hurricanes is included in your standard policy. If not, you will have to buy a separate windstorm policy from the Citizens Property Insurance Company (1-888-685-1555).
If you can't find someone to insure you at all, call the Florida Market Assistance Program at 1-800-524-9023 or 1-850-513-3800. It takes at least 30 days to buy hurricane insurance. So don't wait until you hear that a storm is coming to try and buy insurance.
Texas
Because of disputes involving mold, it became very difficult for a while to buy home insurance in Texas. So to help families, the Texas Department of Insurance has created a great website called HelpInsure.com. To get help finding insurance, or call 1-888-695-6873.
