How much insurance should I buy?
You want to buy enough insurance to:

  • Replace your home and property if it is damaged.
  • Protect your savings if you're found liable for hurting someone or damaging their
  • property.
  • Make sure that you can afford a temporary place to stay, if you have to leave your home because of a fire or other disaster.

  • Talk with your insurance agent about how much insurance you need to meet these goals.

Should I buy flood insurance?
Floods are not covered by standard homeowners insurance. If you live in a high flood area, it would be a good idea to buy an additional flood policy. Find out more about flood insurance.

Should I buy earthquake insurance?
If you live in California, earthquake insurance makes a lot of sense. But it can also come in handy if you live outside of California; earthquakes happen in almost all of the 50 states. Learn more about earthquake insurance.

Are my belongings covered by my insurance?
Most home insurance policies have limits to claims for jewelry, electronics, and many other kinds of property. So if you own anything really expensive, you should carefully read your insurance policy and talk with your insurance agent about whether these items are fully covered

If they're not covered, you will probably be able to buy additional insurance for these specific items by adding what are called "endorsements" to your policy. An endorsement will cover you against loss as well as theft or damage from a fire or other disaster.
