Help for Families and Caregivers
How should you talk to older adults about driving?
The best time to talk about driving is before there is a problem. Ask "What if?" questions. What if you start feeling unsafe driving? What if I start feeling you are unsafe driving? What if you limit your driving? What if you stop driving?
If you need help, talk to a friend with an older relative or a caregivers' support group. Other family members and your loved one's doctor can also be helpful.
What are signs that an older driver should stop driving?
- Forgetting to buckle seatbelt.
- Failing to obey stop signs or traffic lights.
- Driving too slow or too fast.
- Getting lost often.
- Failing to stay in his or her lane.
- Reacts slowly.
