Even if the total amount of your home insurance policy is higher than $100,000, you might not have enough coverage to replace all of your property if it's stolen or damaged.

Why?
Most insurance policies limit the amount of money they'll pay for specific items no matter how much they are worth. For example, most standard insurance policies will only pay you up to $5,000 (and some as little as $1,000) to replace stolen jewelry, even if it's worth more. And if you lose the jewelry and can't prove it was stolen, you won't get any money to replace it.

So if you own any expensive items, including jewelry, stereo equipment or a computer, check your insurance policy to see how much money you'll get if these things are lost, stolen or damaged.

If you don't think you'd get enough money to replace the items you can either buy a "floater" on your policy that will provide additional coverage on those items or, buy a separate policy just to cover those items.
