Build: Preparing For An Interview

The key to having a good interview is being prepared. Here's what you need to do.

A Week Before the Interview

  • Think about why you want the job.
Write down your top three reasons and be prepared to explain them to the employer.
  • Practice interviewing.
Ask a friend or family member to practice interviewing with you. Don't forget to work on your handshake, which should be firm but not too hard.
  • Learn about the company.
Research the company before you go to the interview. Ask for materials from the main office or research the company Web site.
  • Get directions and plan your trip.
Find out exactly where you're going for the interview, how to get there, and about how much time it will take you. Always leave extra time to get there – just in case.

The Day of the Interview

  • Dress to impress.
A coat and tie for men and a dress or suit for women are appropriate.
  • Bring supplies.
Take an extra copy of your resume to the interview. You should also bring a pen and a small notebook to take notes.
  • Be on time.
Get to the interview about 10 minutes early.
