Michael
De La Hoya Heating And Cooling Systems Mechanic
Michael began his career at 14 without really knowing it.
That's when he started helping his father repair air
conditioning and heating units. Now Michael runs a family
business, De La Hoya Heating and Cooling.
He never thought he'd follow in his father's
footsteps, but Michael worked with his father over the years
and discovered that he likes the flexibility of running
his own company. His work is challenging because he's
always learning something new.
Every day, Michael handles sales and customer service for
his two stores. He used to work as an installer, putting
in heating and cooling systems. Now he trains most of his
employees, teaching them about sheet metal, piping, and
system mechanics. Michael and his service people are also
trouble-shooters. "We need to know about electrical
and control systems," he says. "We're
like detectives looking for the key to solving the mystery."
The heating and cooling industry is a good place for people
interested in mechanics. "You really have to enjoy
something like this to do it well," Michael says.
"You have to learn a lot about mechanics. You also
need good customer service skills because all of our jobs
involve customers."
