Shirley is an information technology specialist at a non-profit
organization. She answers software questions, maintains
the computer server, and handles computer problems. She
also maintains office payroll logs and answers phones.
Shirley didn't always have this job – she never
thought she could. Three years ago, she joined the non-profit
as a receptionist to pay her rent. Because of her dedicated
personality and hard work, she quickly became the office
manager. In the process, she discovered a love for computer
systems.
"I've really changed the office manager position
to fit my needs and interests. I deal with a lot of computer
issues now," Shirley says. Before coming to her current
job, Shirley had lots of administrative assistant positions.
Now she's on a career track. When Shirley dropped
out of college after getting pregnant ten years ago, she
never imagined she would go back to school. She's
currently studying computer information systems. "Everybody
needs to find out what they like to do," Shirley says.
"When you do what you love, you can be happy at work
and at home."
