Ron Jacobs got his first toy truck when he was three. He
told everyone he wanted to drive trucks when he grew up.
Ron's uncle drove trucks for a living, so Ron was
able to ride with him once in a while. When he got his first
taste of being out on the road, he never let go of his dream.
In high school, Ron started driving vans for a small company.
He made weekly package deliveries to offices around the
city. He stayed with his company for 12 years, until they
went out of business. Ron moved to a larger international
truck company because he wanted to drive longer distances
in bigger trucks.
To prepare himself for his new job, Ron took a driver-training
course to get a commercial driver's license. He had
to pass a written test and a driver's exam. Ron has
been a heavy truck driver for 8 years now. He makes deliveries
to different cities, spending long periods away from home.
"The best part is going out to different places and
seeing the countryside," Ron says.
Before he travels, Ron has to do a full check-up on his
truck. He checks the oil and fuel and inspects the brakes,
windshield wipers, and lights. He also makes sure a fire
extinguisher and other safety equipment are on board at
all times.
When Ron reaches his destination, he helps load and unload
the cargo. Ron enjoys his job and wants to keep driving
trucks for a few more years. "I get to travel and
see new places and meet new people," Ron says. "It's
definitely hard work, but it's worth it. The money
is good and I like the freedom."
