Getting a GED

GED: What It Is
The Graduate Equivalency Diploma (GED) is a degree for people who didn't finish high school. It's equal to a high school diploma.

Why You Need a GED
Your chances of getting a good job are better if you have a high school diploma or GED.

How to Get a GED
You have to pass the GED test to get one. Click here for more information on the GED test.

How to Get Ready for the GED Test
If you recently dropped out of 11th or 12th grade, you may be ready to take the GED test without really studying. Otherwise, it's a good idea to study for the test. Here are a few ways to study:

  • Take a free or low-cost study course: To find a study course near you, check with your local high school or community college or call the GED hotline at 1-800-626-9433.
  • Watch a GED course on TV: A lot of local public television stations offer free GED courses on TV (check your local listings or call 1-800-354-9067 for more information).
  • Use a study book: Click here for a list of books you can use to prepare for the GED test.
  • Take an online study course: There are several courses available online that will help you prepare for the GED. You usually have to pay to take one of these courses.

Click here to go to one of the better GED course websites. (It costs $50 for a 4-month membership).
